Dragon Quest IV Chapters of the Chosen, originally called Dragon Warrior IV upon its introduction to North America, was a role-playing online game. It’s the 4th installment the Dragon Quest videogame series. Published by Enix, it is also the 1st in the Zenithian Trilogy. It was originally released in Japan for Famicom, on February 11, 1990.
Heartbeat created a remake of the game for the PlayStation. It was later made available as an Ultimate Hits video game. ArtePiazza released a second remake of the game for the Nintendo DS in Japan in November 2007 as well as worldwide in September 2008. In 2014, a version based in part on the Nintendo DS remake released for Android (and iOS)
Dragon Quest IV has five chapters. This is a departure from the rest. Each chapter focuses upon a different protagonist. The Hero’s future partners are told the first four chapters, and the Hero’s viewpoint is for the fifth. The fifth chapter, however, brings together all of the characters in their quest to save this world. The PlayStation remake adds a sixth section, which is retained in DS remake.
Dragon Quest IV. Chapters and the Chosen Complete Walkthrough
This is Dragon Quest IV: My complete walkthrough. Although I’m not holding your hand throughout the journey, I will guide you in the right directions but let you explore the towns. Any puzzles or trouble spots I may cover, but the main thing is to have fun.
Dragon Quest IV Walkingthrough – Chapter 1.
Clear out all the containers and pots to get a Seed, Medicinal Herb, or 3 Gold Coins when you start the game. Exit through the north when you’re done. The barrels can be broken outside for an Antidote herbal. Once you’re done, cross the bridge. Once you have spoken with the frog, go into the basement. Red-haired, frog-like girl with red hair will greet you in the basement.
Your Hero’s residence is found in the western part of the village. You will need to speak with Eliza (the red-haired froggirl), before you can go into the building. This will allow you to move the story forward.
The game’s mechanics are a bit complicated so here’s the quick rundown. In the first half you’ll be switching between 4 characters. Each character has a story that you need to complete. The Hero will return you to play and the party will reunite.
Although each adventure can be completed in a short time, there will still be a lot to do when you take control of a new character. It is common to save your Seeds of Strength/Wisdom Items until you have control of the Hero, then you can use all of these items for him.
Once Ragnar the King is in control, you’ll be able to explain the situation. Ragnar has sent out an AMBER alert about some children. You will need to take the role of Batman and save them. Southeast from Ragnar the King’s control, you’ll discover a Medicinal Herb. Once this is completed, you can exit the castle.
While I will not direct your search to every treasure in every town throughout this guide, I will point you in the right direction for the most important. There will be many barrels of pots throughout the town, which can be used to make items. You also have drawers and bookshelves. If you have difficulty locating where you want to go, you can use the R and L buttons to rotate the Camera.
Just south of The Church is a building. (See screen shot below). It houses a lady who walks the streets during the day. You can speak with her! It’s needed for story advancement. On the other side, near the entrance, is a chest that contains a Seed to Strength.
You’re done shopping in town! It’s now time to grind! For the next 20 minutes or so, you will want grind outside of town. If you’re too weak to continue at the Inn to heal your health, visit the Church for a remedy.
Once you’ve made enough gold, stop by the armor shop to buy some headgear. Spend the remaining Medicinal Herbs to the item store, and when you feel confident enough walking far from the town without fear, go to the Inn. From there, head northwest until you see a cave.
Burland Requirements
– Talk with Aigneas Angus’ spouse
Burland Cavern can be accessed easily. There are 2 treasure chests in the Cavern – 1 with 40 Gold Coins; and 1 with a Medicinal Herb. The northern section has the stairs to exit the Dungeon. Strathbaile is located just a few steps east of Burland Caves exit.
You’ll find a few items to be collected in this area, including pots and barrels, drawers, bookshelves, and drawers. To progress the story you’ll need Angus (a prisoner in a basement). You will find the steps down to the basement in northeastern town, next to Church.
You’ll need the menu to select “Talk” in order to talk to Angus. You will just interact with his door and never be allowed to speak with him.
Strathbaile requires a story.
Angus the basement prisoner can be contacted.
– (After speaking to Angus) Return to Burland, speak to Aigneas, then bring her back with Angus.
After you’ve spoken with Angus you’ll want a return trip to Burland, where you can speak with Aigneaus. As a noncombatant, she’ll join you party. Return to Angus Strathbaile. Angus can get his memories back once Angus is reunited with his wife.
Our next destination will be in the forest southeast of Strathbaile. Before leaving town, make sure your body is fully healed. You should also have enough Medicinal Herbs to go through at least 20-30 fights. You may find it difficult to navigate the next dungeon. There won’t even be a guide.
You’ll want to simply wander through the forest southeast Strathbaile until your reach a new location that will have a violet-slime and well where you can drop down to the North. To proceed, descend into the well.
You will find a message in this dungeon that appears when you head in the right direction. This message says “Over there”. Follow this to find Healie, the healslime. Screen shot is below. Healie doesn’t have to be a requirement. However, he is a big help because Ragnar can not heal himself using Medicinal Herbs.
Story requirements for the Hidden Playground
Grab Talaria, the Treasure Chest from the Dungeon
– Call Healie and ask him to join your party
One floor below Healie will be a treasure-trove with the Talaria. It is the item that brought us to the dungeon. The screen shot below shows where the chest can be found. In another version of this game, it may also be called Winged Shoes.
Strathbaile is now accessible with both Healie (and the Winged Shoes) in your hands. To exit, you will need to keep climbing until you reach a pit you’ll be able to drop into. Here you’ll see a staircase that leads to a room filled with treasures.
Retire to Strathbaile, get well and buy any necessary equipment. You will then head west towards Strathbaile Tower. Now, you will need to stand on the water’s edges as I have shown. After that, you will need to go into your inventory. You can then use the Talaria object we obtained from the previousdungeon. This will lift you up to the top.
You can speak to the little boy who is standing next to you when you reach the top. The monster will soon retreat inside. Navigating to the tower is not difficult. But, be sure to grab the treasure chests along the way. One has the Cautery Sword which has an incredible attack power and has much more damage than any other weapons. Once you find it, immediately equip it.
Continue on down until your find the basement with the boy and the beast we saw in our first visit. Also, there will be an elderly man sitting on a large piece of stone. Talking with this old man can trigger the boss fight.
I recommend first taking out Winky, then focusing completely on the boss. If you don’t have the time to grind gold for gear then the fight shouldn’t be hard.
After defeating your boss, you can go up one level and then leave the tower. The boss will drop you to ground level. Use the Talaria Item to send you up the tower. Once there, you’ll be able to turn around and go your way. This will allow you to return to the riverside Strathbaile is located on.
Return the children to Strathbaile. After that, return to Burland. Talk to the King in Burland for your final reward on Ragnar.

Dragon Quest IV – Chapter 2 Walkthrough
Alena, the young lady who will be your main character, starts a new adventure. This chapter begins in Zamoksva Castle. It is located in Zalenagrad. Once Alena is in your hands, you will be able to search the castle for items that can be used on your adventure.
Kiryl is on the ground floor of the church, so you can talk to him while you’re looking for the castle. This will cause Alena’s upstairs construction guy to leave.
Alena’s Room: You’ll see a hole through the wall, which has been covered with wooden planks. Break through it, and you’ll be outside Alena’s room. If you descend to the ground, two people will emerge from the castle in the same way as you.
Story Requirements for Zamoksva Castle
– Kiryl is available for questions in the church
– You can go to Alena’s Room.
Once you have left the castle, you will be on the World Map. The small town Zalenagrad should be your next stop. A single Seed of Agility is available in this town. It can be found in a small barrel by the Weapon Shop’s owner. The armor shop will also be available. You might want to go there a few more times to earn some money before you head to the north. Headgear can be a good investment for your team and offers great armor value.
The goal is to continue grinding outside Zalenagrad, ensuring that your entire team is at level 3+. After that, you will be able to equip a few armor pieces to them. Tabarov is just northeast of Zalenagrad. You can see it in my screen-shot below.
Anastasia Tabarov is the person to speak with. Anastasia is the only one you should speak to. She’s in the large eastern building. He will bring the priest to you. Talk to the priest at the church if you’re ready for the boss fight against the monster.
Tabarov has a story requirement
– Meet Anastasia in the western building
– Anastasia’s father can be reached at (eastern Building)
– Tell the priest, that you’re willing to fight the beast
I would recommend you at least be level 5 before you move forward. You can also save before fighting your boss and keep trying until the boss is defeated. The fight is not too difficult. However, the weaker members of your party can be eliminated in one round if you get them better gear and higher level.
You should focus all of your attention and energy on the Foo Dogs in this boss fight. Borya and Kiryl will be defeated if all three foes attack in a single turn.
Master Kung is very powerful and can be quite brutal so keep everyone above 50% health using Kiryl. Also, use melee attacks to bring him down. This is all there really is! After defeating Master Kung, you’ll return to Tabarov, where you’ll find the Item Shop reopening. Or, you can shop there if that’s what you prefer. If not, then head north, through the Church, to Vrenor. This is a small, unincorporated town located northeast of Tabarov. It’s a steep climb up for the monsters so be careful.
When you first arrive at Vrenor, make sure you go to the second level of the Inn. Here you can interrupt a kidnapping. Follow the kidnappers and you will be able to re-enter Vrenor. This time, you’ll have the opportunity to stay in the Inn.
Talking with the boy at the fountain in the centre of Vrenor will allow you to progress the story. He will inform you about a Ransom Letter he found for his dog. After speaking with him you can talk to the man in a building at the northern end of town, where is the Cemetery. You’ll hear from him about a bracelet at the Vault for Vrenor. This is our next stop.
Story Requirements for Vrenor
– Visit the second floor and take in the view before you leave town.
– For the Ransom Mail, speak to the boy next to Vrenor.
Talk to the man from the northern area of Vrenor to find out more about the Sparkly Bracelet at Vault of Vrenor
Do some grinding before going to the Vault of Vrenor. I recommend grinding Vrenor until the entire party is level 8-9. This will take some time. When you are almost done grinding, you should return to Tabarov in order to purchase some armor/weapons at the Item Shop.
Note Hunter’s Bow: This bow can be used for your entire group and is available in Tabarov’s Item Shop. You’ll get twice the damage from every melee attack. This bow is strongly recommended for all characters.
If you are finally ready to venture into the Vault Of Vrenor, it is located south-east of Vrenor. My screen shot is below to provide additional guidance.
The Vault of Vrenor, a dungeon full of Treasure Chests, is quite straightforward. To retrieve the Amulet of Transmutation, you must first find it within the vault. This item is located on second floor in the dungeon’s southernmost end (as shown in my screenshot above).
Once the Amulet of Transmutation has been retrieved, you can roam around the outside of Vrenor until the night. Three NPCs in Vrenor, at the northern tip of the town, will appear after the sun has set. You will want to trade the Thief’s Key for the Amulet of Transmutation.
Notice: You’ll find a Seed of Life within the garden in the southern part of town. During the day, the priest blocks it but at night, he doesn’t.
Once you receive the Thief’s Key you can spend the night at The Inn. The Weapon Shop will also be available in the town. The Iron Lance for Kiryl, however, is the only upgrade that I consider worth purchasing. This assumes, of course, that everyone has a Hunter’s Bow.
Whatever your choice is, after leaving town, travel south past Vault of Vrenor until reaching the Desert Bazaar. In this town, you will find an Armor and Weaponshop that sells many upgrades to your team. We’ll return to this place to get them.
Running around is necessary to continue the story. When you attempt to enter large tent located in the Desert Bazaar’s western section, a guard will stop and tell you that your dad is ill.
Using a Chimerawing out of your inventory is the fastest and most efficient way to return from Zamoksva Castle. Go to the King’s room, and speak with the man in purple who is roaming the streets (his advisor). He tells to talk to Starek at the castle back, near the gardens. Starek can only be reached through the hole at the wall of Alena’s bedroom. The blue door is located near the place where you are about to fall to the earth. Starek, the old man in this area, is Starek.
Story Requirements Desert Town-Desert Tower:
– Do not try to enter the tent in Desert Town. A guard will stop you.
– Visit Zamoksva Castle again to talk to the advisor.
– Contact Starek, the back of Castle
Josef Starling will be happy to speak with you in the town just above the Church’s balconies
Starek says to you to talk with Josef Starling at the village west Zamoksva Castle. Josef is found on the second level balcony of the church, as shown in the screen shot. He tells you that the potion that he bought from the Desert Bazaar helped him to regain his voice when he spoke to me.
Chimera wings, yes! Or you can run back to Desert Bazaar, where you’ll speak with the lady running the item shop. You will be directed to the Desert Tower by her. At least level 10 is required before you can enter the dungeon. It is highly recommended that you have at least level 10 before you begin the dungeon.
You will find an Inn via the double yellow/brown openings on the Desert Tower’s second floor. If you are having trouble finding it, you can use the L and R buttons to move your camera around. This is what you should do to this dungeon. Keep your hands busy picking up treasure chests as well as leveling up. It’s not hard to figure out the dungeon, so you won’t need help. Borya’s Evac ability can be used when Kiryl runs short of MP.
To get rid of this place, go to the top and you’ll see two elf ladies. After they leave, you’ll find some nectar. Grab it and Evac. Once you have the nectar, return it to your father. You can then use it by standing in front of your father. Borya’s Zoom spell will allow you to leave this continent.
Turn east to Desert Bazaar. You will find a tiny dome-shaped building which allows you to teleport across it. My screen shot below shows you the castle town Endor located south of your new land mass.
We’re now near the end of the chapter. To talk with the King, and learn his plan to make a woman win the Colosseum match, and then to allow her to participate in the final match. I recommend you have at least level 14 to try this. You can also stock up on Medicinal Herbs in Alena’s inventory.
The colosseum matches go very smoothly. Alena is your only opponent and you will be spamming attacks all the time. You will be able heal with any Medicinal Herbs after each fight – which you should.
The entire castle has been deserted by the time you win the colosseum tourney. You can continue through the castle, and then back out of Alena’s chamber. Just as we always do. End Alena’s Chapter by exiting to the global map.

Strathbaile Prison Mini Medal
This Mini Medal requires you to have the Ultimate Key in order to reach it. Strathbaile is also on our Zoom list, so it’s not difficult getting there. The Mini Medal is found in a cup in the cell.
Items to Look For:
Mini Medal
Ballymoral Prison cell
Zoom over Endor and follow the northerly route to Ballymoral. You can also enter the Ballymoral castle during the day and descend into the prisoner’s area. While there will be two guards on the streets, you won’t have to dodge them all. There are many treats that will make up for this inconvenience.

Items to Look For:
Horse Manure
